The Estill Voice Model: Theory And Translation.epub Theo Estill is a Canadian author of the novel The Gold-Bug Variations, which tells the story of an American inventor who invents a machine that translates any language into English. He finds himself in competition with Aaron Burr, who has parallel ambitions of his own to conquer all languages and to endow them with innovative life under new forms. Estill's machine, however, is far more sophisticated than anything Burr could achieve. The novel is reminiscent of both the "panoptic machine" of George Orwell's 1984, and also of the classic science-fiction novel The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein. 1. The Gold-Bug Variations has many serialized prequels that are not essential to the story itself, but that give background on its characters and their attitudes toward language. Read these before or after reading the novel (more convenient if already in hand) to understand how they relate to the larger story. Wikipedia entries about various characters in these prequels are very useful in understanding their motivations and futures in this series. 2. Discuss the themes and plot of this novel and how you think it compares to others that explore similar ideas. 3. Is the novel a good example of either science fiction or spy fiction? Why? 4. How is this novel like or unlike George Orwell's book 1984, and why do you think this similarity/difference is present? 5. Write a short (max. 2 pages) summary of the plot, with NOTES ON THE PLOT, back-story, and implications on society as expressed in the novel. 6. Suggest how the novel fits into the "literary genres" of science fiction, spy fiction, or other genres. 7. Comment on the translation of different languages in the novel, and its relation to society. 8. Does this novel have any particular value? Why? To order The Gold-Bug Variations click here . Theo Estill is currently working on over 200 pages of novels and short stories set in the science fiction metropolis known as Nova NovaCity. His writing is influenced by Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Arthur C. Clarke, John Barth, Philip K. Dick and various other scientists (see "Research"). He is also creating three interconnected series of novels (that are all stand-alones) set in the future of our own world. eccc085e13
